Author Guidelines
1) Three types of original manuscripts are accepted for publication in “Moscow Journal of International Law” (the Journal): (legal) research articles; (legal) review articles and commentaries to international legal documents.
- An Article Researching International Law - Article is an original academic research aimed at contributing to the development of international law doctrine, including through increasing the existent academic knowledge on construction and application of international law rules and principles;
- An Article Reviewing books and articles on International law - is an analytical review of research publications dedicated to a certain international law issue including unofficial systematisations of international law sources within particular international law areas, reviews of states’ international law policy as well as researches concerning international legal study disciplines.
- Commentaries to International Legal Documents - contain individual academic and analytical clarifications to the texts of newly adopted treaties and other international law documents made, as a general rule, by the authors or co-authors participating in the drafting process;
2) Authors’ liability for the plagiarism found in their manuscripts is governed by the law of the Russian Federation.
A submitted manuscript may not be a repetition of previously published works of its author (authors) or an essential part of such works. Originality requirement applies to works published abroad. Quotations of academic research results previously published by the author (including cases of co-authorship) are allowed.
3) The authors commit themselves not to submit the manuscripts submitted, fully or in part, to any other periodical after their submission to the Journal. The authors are released from the above mentioned obligation provided that the Editorial Board of the Journal have notified the rejection of submission.
4) As a general rule, the editors accept manuscripts submitted by law scholars with the academic degree of candidate or doctor in law, as well as with foreign academic degrees including PhD in law. In exceptional cases manuscripts submitted by researchers without an academic degree are accepted in case the professional activity of the authors is closely related to law (lawyers, law enforcement officers or other state body’s employees, corporations’ legal department employees etc.) provided that the content of the manuscript reveals the authors’ profound knowledge of international law.
5) Manuscripts in Russian or English may be submitted.
6) The Journal issues are published four times a year.
7) Submitted manuscripts pass two stages of review: (a) pre-review by a member of the Editorial Board carried out upon a request of the editor-in-chief or deputy editor-in-chief; and (b) peer-review (“blind”, “anonymous” review) by two international law publicists who have, as a general rule, published fundamental academic research in the area close to that of the reviewed manuscript.
During the pre-review stage a manuscript is rejected only if it is apparently inconsistent with the present Rules or contains numerous mistakes in usage of Russian or English. At this stage a manuscript shall be returned to the author no later than two weeks after its receipt by the editors of the Journal.
During the peer-review stage manuscripts are communicated to the reviewers with no mention of names of their authors. The reviews drafted according to the prescribed form are sent to the Journal within one month and contain one of the following conclusions:
- approved for publication with no improvement needed;
- approved for publication upon improvement (observations and suggestions for improvement are laid out);
- Publication rejected;
The reviewers’ conclusions are communicated to the authors with no mention of the names of the former.
In case of disagreement with any of reviewers’ conclusions the authors retain the right to submit to the Journal an improved manuscript with a reasoned clarification of the reasons for such disagreement containing references to legal documents or academic sources. In such case, the final decision concerning the manuscript (including its referral for an additional review) is made by the editor-in-chief or deputy editor-in-chief.
8) Correspondence with authors is done by e-mail.
9) The Editorial Board retains the right to edit the titles of the articles.
10) Copyright transfer agreement done in duplicate is submitted alongside other materials.
The copyright agreement comes into force upon decision of the Editorial Board to publish the manuscript.
11) Manuscripts should be between 32 000 and 40 000 symbols including spaces (metadata not counted).
12) Manuscripts should be submitted via online submission system or a letter sent to the official e-mail address of the Journal - mjil2@mail.ru.
Two separate files should be submitted: (1) containing information about the author(s) – see p. 13 below; (2) containing the text of the article according to the prescribed form with no mention of author(s) so that it can be referred to the reviewers designated by the Journal editors.
Accepted file extensions are doc and docs.
13) Apart from the text of the article the files submitted should contain (both in Russian and English)
- Full names of the authors. The authors should specify the transliteration of their names in Latin characters as used in their previous publications.
- Authors’ place of employment – including full postal address (country, city/town, street, house) and postcode.
- Authors’ job title, academic or other degree.
- Authors’ e-mail.
- ORCID ID
- Abstract of the article (no less than 250 words).
14) The abstract should cover the aim and objectives of the research, distinctness of research methodology, its main points and conclusions. The English abstract may not be a word to word translation of the Russian abstract, untranslatable Russian idioms are not allowed. The abstract should be written using proper legal terms and concepts so as to communicate the aims, objectives, methodology, content and conclusions of the research to the reader.
The recommended abstract structure contains the following sections: introduction, materials and methods, research results, discussions and conclusions.
15) There should be no less than 7 and no more than 15 keywords.
16) References should be made as follows:
Citations in the Text of the Article
References to academic literature should be made in the form of in-text bibliographic citations mentioning authors’ names, year of publication and number of pages in the publication cited. If a bibliographical description contains no mention of authors, the in-text citations should contain 2-3 first words of the publication title.

References to student books, learning guides, extended abstracts of dissertations and dissertations, official and other information sources, including online sources, must be made in the form of footnotes.
References
References should be written in Russian and English in alphabetical order. They should include scientific monographs and compendia, articles from periodic journals and scientific analytical reports.
References in English should contain English transliteration of information about works in Russian written in accordance with transliteration rules (BSI standard as laid out at translit.ru). The place of publishing should be written in full. References to translated (into Russian) books and articles should contain the original titles and names of foreign authors.
